There are books that fill a page... and then there are books that fill your brain, challenge your thinking, and leave fingerprints on your worldview. This list is full of the second kind.
Whether your student dreams of becoming a writer, wants to better understand the world, or just needs a break from textbooks with a story they’ll enjoy spending time in, these books are essentials — not because some curriculum says so, but because stretch imagination, sharpen perspective, and leave a mark long after the final chapter.
Here are the five books we think every creative, curious high schooler should experience before they turn their tassel.
A Curious Mind – Brian Grazer A look into how one man turned his love of asking questions into one a top producing career in Hollywood, and how any student can get ahead simply by asking more questions.
The Four Agreements – Don Miguel Ruiz A quick, thoughtful read for anyone who wants to live with clarity and self-respect, no matter what comes next.
Earth is Hiring - Peta Kelly A fun read for students looking to get more out of the next stage of their life than just higher institutional education. It is about connecting to people and the planet as you make your way in the world.
The Long Game – Dorie Clark This one is especially good for students who feel pressured to have it all figured out. It’s about pacing yourself, making choices that last, and building a life that doesn’t burn out before it begins.
I Will Teach Your To Be Rich – Ramit Sethi It is essential for any creative to understand how the financial world works, and how you can work it to fund your life, so while your friends are grinding for 50 years, you are out there living your dreams.
Every one of these books offers a challenge, a mirror, a new lens. Some may become favorites. Others might provoke an eye-roll or a heated opinion (and honestly, we love that too).
The point isn't to agree with everything - it's to engage, to think, to questions. That's the kind of reading that prepares students for more than college or a career - it prepares them to live thoughtfully and boldly in the world.
