Hatchet by Gary Paulsen follows thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson after a plane crash leaves him alone in the Canadian wilderness. With only a hatchet, the clothes he is wearing, and whatever knowledge he can remember, Brian must learn how to find food, build shelter, protect himself, and make decisions without the help of an adult.

As Brian learns to survive, he also has to adjust to being alone with his thoughts and emotions. The story gives students an opportunity to examine how a young person responds to fear, failure, uncertainty, responsibility, and change while developing practical problem-solving skills.

This workbook guides students through Hatchet with reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary, spelling, critical thinking, and creative writing activities.

In this workbook, students will engage with the book's themes and develop key skills, including:

• Reading Comprehension: Answer questions that require students to recall, explain, interpret, and evaluate what they have read.
• Survival and Problem-Solving: Examine the decisions Brian makes as he learns how to survive and consider how observation, planning, experimentation, and persistence help him respond to problems.
• Character Development: Follow Brian's development throughout the novel and examine how his experiences affect his thoughts, behavior, confidence, and ability to make decisions.
• Themes: Explore themes including survival, independence, perseverance, responsibility, fear, self-reliance, and adapting to unfamiliar circumstances.
• Vocabulary: Study words from the novel and build vocabulary through definitions, context, usage, and written practice.
• Spelling: Strengthen spelling skills using vocabulary and words connected to the text.
• Creative Writing: Complete an original writing activity inspired by Hatchet, using the novel as a starting point for developing characters, settings, descriptions, and narrative ideas.
• Literary Analysis: Examine how Paulsen uses setting, characterization, conflict, imagery, and pacing to develop the story.
• Critical Thinking: Respond to questions that ask students to explain their reasoning, consider Brian's choices, make connections, and support their answers with details from the novel.

Throughout the workbook, students will work through a variety of short activities designed to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, literary analysis, critical thinking, and writing skills. The workbook is structured so that students can complete a workbook chapter in approximately 10-30 minutes, depending on their reading pace and the amount of time they spend developing their written responses.

The activities are designed to work alongside the novel. Students will need their own copy of Hatchet and will regularly return to the text as they answer questions, study vocabulary, examine Brian's choices, and complete writing activities.

By the end of the workbook, students will have developed a stronger understanding of Hatchet while practicing language arts skills that extend beyond this one novel. They will have worked with vocabulary and spelling, strengthened their reading comprehension and literary analysis skills, and completed a creative writing activity that asks them to use ideas from the book as a foundation for their own writing.

Why is the workbook only 10-30 minutes a chapter?

This is a general estimate for the workbook activities and does not include reading time. Students read at different speeds and may spend different amounts of time answering questions, completing vocabulary and spelling activities, or developing their creative writing. Some students may complete a day's activities quickly, while others may spend additional time returning to the novel to find details or developing a more complete written response.

The workbook is designed to provide consistent language arts practice without requiring a large daily time commitment. Reading Hatchet will take additional time outside of the estimated workbook time.

What grade level is this workbook designed for?

The workbook is ideal for ages 12-14. But you know your student best. Reading ability, writing experience, and independence vary from student to student. Hatchet has an AR reading level of 5.7.

Does my student need to read Hatchet before completing the workbook?

Students should read Hatchet alongside the workbook. Many of the activities ask students to recall details, examine Brian's choices, analyze the setting and characters, and respond to events in the novel. Students will likely need access to the book while completing the workbook.
